13 Simple SEO Tips To Drive Free Organic Blog Traffic

Best SEO Tips To Rank Higher On Google

1.Speed Up Your Website

First off, one thing you should look at is how fast your website/blog site takes to load. No one wants to spend more than 1 to 3 seconds trying to gain access to your site.

Definitely not me! And I am sure I am speaking for everyone who uses the internet.

So, if your website/blog site takes more than 3 seconds to load, here are a few things you need to know as a blogger:

  • It will affect your sign-ups, sales, and conversions. Once your site takes long to load, your visitors will get frustrated and start to boycott your site for others!

You can use tools like Google pagespeed insights, GTmetrix and Pingdom to check the speed of your website.

Your website should load in no more than 3 seconds. If it takes any longer than 3 seconds, you should try to reduce it to 1-3 seconds.

Oftentimes Large images, Outdated plugins and unused CSS cause your website to load slowly. Make sure you find and get rid of those outdated things.

You can also use caching plugins to speed up your website.

I use WP Rocket as it is the best caching plugin in the market. it improves your site speed by letting you lazy load images, Minify HTML, Minify/combine CSS and Minify Javascript.

I experienced a big boost in my site speed after installing WP Rocket and I highly recommend you to try this plugin out.

They also have a money-back guarantee so if you don’t see any results after using this plugin, you can get your money back.

The final goal is to make your website load faster and provide an amazing user experience which is one of the most important ranking factors for Google.

2.Set Up Your Permalink the Right Way

Your permalink is not there for fancy. It is a unique URL that makes it easy for your visitors to easily find and have access to your blog posts.

And this is why your Permalink should be structured in the right format that would enable your visitors and even search engines to access your site better.

To get the right Permalink set up, here are a few tips you should know:

  • Change your permalink structure from the default https:/yourwebsite.com/?p=123 to  https:/yourwebsite.com/postname.You can do this by going to WordPress dashboard >settings >permalinks> choose post name.
  • Stay away from including dates in your URL structure. They add little or no effect to your SEO rankings. In fact, they tend to reduce your rankings and make your blog posts seem outdated.
  • Aim for a shorter URL structure. When you use a shorter URL structure, the effect is noticeable as it allows Google ranks you higher.
  • Make use of HTTPS. Not only is using Https in your URL structure a Google ranking signal, but it also helps to verify your site and make it safe for your users.

These simple changes will help the search engine find and interpret your content better.

3.Include an Optimized Video

If you have not been using video content on your blog, trust me, you should definitely try it out!

Video contents are one sure way to engage your visitors and transition them from the mere audience to consumers in no time.

But to get the better of video content for your SEO rankings, you need optimized videos that would be ranked highly for your blog posts.

Remember, don’t upload your video directly to WordPress. It would make things worse and it will take ages to load the webpage.

Instead, Embed the video from YouTube or any other external platform on your website.

Videos will keep people on your website for a longer time, which will send a positive signal to Google that people love your content and rank your website higher.

Moreover, videos will help you build trust and rapport with your audience fast.

4.Aim to win a featured snippet

Have you ever wondered how some texts just pop up first when you search for something on Google or any search engine? Those are the featured snippets.

These featured snippets are drawn from Google’s indexed web pages to provide speedy answers to a user’s questions before they click on any other search results.

So you see, winning a featured snippet is a big deal for you, as it would expose your blog and its content to users fast.

Here are some tips on how to optimize your content to win featured snippet:

  1.  Include a short and concise answer to  the search query within the first few paragraphs of the post
  2. Maintain clear heading structures within the post (H2 and H3)
  3. Use lists wherever possible
  4. Search for the most searched keywords and optimize your blog content to fit into these keywords.

If you don’t know how to search for featured snippets keyword, SEMrush is here to save the day. It would help you identify the keywords which have the potential to appear in the featured snippets.

5.Make Your Website Mobile-Friendly

I am not sure that this is a tip I should be sharing because one thing you should know as a blogger is that most internet users access the internet from their mobile devices.

In simple terms, it means that you need to structure and design your blog site or website to be more mobile-friendly.

If you own a blog site that is more desktop-friendly, you might just be shooting yourself in the leg.

Therefore, to give your blog the life that it needs, you need to work on the mobile-friendliness, by making your blog look and function effectively.

Change your theme if required. Most of the themes nowadays are responsive. However, if you’re running your blog on some old crappy theme, its time to make some change.

It would help you provide a great user experience and Google will reward you for that.

6.Create Content for Human, Not for Search Engine

Yeah, I know I have been hammering on SEO, website speed, User experience, featured snippets, and all. But let’s not forget that even though you use these SEO tips to get higher rankings on Google, what would keep your user engaged is your CONTENT.

Even if SEO tips gets you the ranking and exposure that your blog needs, you need good content to keep and sustain the rankings.

This is why you need to create valuable and consumable blog content that your audience would appreciate and benefit from, and not focus on rankings and algorithms only.

Don’t try to fool Google.

If your audience loves your content, Google will automatically rank you higher than others. It’s that simple!

7.Optimize Your Content for Voice Search

Voice searches are becoming increasingly popular.

Many internet users now rely on voice searches to navigate their devices and make inquiries. We have the Siri for iPhone, Cortana for Microsoft users, and the Google voice search for Android users.

This means that voice searching is not going anywhere pretty soon, and what best way to boost your blog than keying into this voice search optimization.

To make this work for your blog, you need to be ready to provide swift, accurate, clear, natural, and detailed oral information that users need on the go!

8.Use Tables, graphs and infographics

Google just loves data!

Try using tables, graphs and infographics in your posts wherever possible.

It would help your audience comprehend the information better. Also, it would make you stand out from the rest of your competitors as no one is making an effort to putting all the data together in easily consumable graphics.

In my experience, this kind of content gets more social shares, which will again send a strong signal to Google that people are engaging with your content.

Trust me, you would see a huge improvement in your rankings by applying this little trick.

9.Create High-quality Long-form Content

If you are in the habit of breezing in and out of your blog site, by dropping a few hundred words per post, I am here to tell you that you need to stop.

Not only because sharing a concise view on some trending topics or relevant keywords doesn’t show that you are serious about blogging, but because long-form content is the key factor in boosting SEO.

Now that doesn’t mean that you stuff your content with some random stories. What I mean is that write a long, in-depth article which solves the problems of your audience like the one I created: how to start a blog- a helpful and illustrative guide for beginners.

Besides, Google and other social media platforms love long-form and rich content, as buttressed by Neil Patel in the graph below.

And not to mention that long-form blog content earns you more backlinks and leads than concise blog content.

10.Write Killer Headlines

Yes, we might not be allowed to judge a book by its cover, but trust me your audience will definitely judge your blog content by its headlines.

You can’t afford to have wishy-washy headlines for your posts, trust me you don’t.

Headlines are not headlines for nomenclature sakes, they are the window through which your audience get an idea of what you want to share with them.

Hence, you can’t afford to have an unimpressive window!

Your window (headlines) has to be glittering, clean, clear, and attractive.

If your headline is attractive, people are most likely to click on them. And, if you achieve more click-through rates than articles ranking above you, Google will start ranking your post higher than those articles.

The basic tips for creating click-worthy headlines have been put together by Gaz Hall in the image below.

11.Use smart interlinking strategy

Either as backlinks (external) or internal links, linking is important to Google ranking and SEO boosting.

And just as you are particular about building a smart backlinking strategy for your blog, you need to make sure your internal link structure game is strong too.

When your blog contents are linked to one another, it shows that you are not just jumping from topics to topics, and trends to trends.

It shows Google and your audience which posts are related and which posts are more valuable.

Besides, a higher the number of internal links that your blog page has, the longer will people stay on your website, which will help you boost your SEO.

12.Update Any Outdated Content

Outdated content does more harm than good. And hence, you need to get rid of them ASAP.

All you need to do is update old ones and give them a lift. When you do this, it brings that content back to Google’s spotlight.

Now here’s the question that a lot of bloggers ask: Should I update the old article or re-write one?

Here’s my answer: If you need to make major changes to your article, it is wise to write a new fresh article and redirect the traffic coming to old page to the new one.

On the other side, if you just need to change a couple of sentences or numbers, you don’t need to write an entirely new article. Google won’t necessarily re-rank your article.

I hope this makes sense.

Now, let’s move on to the next and final SEO tip.

13.Only Link Back to Authoritative Websites

We have talked about internal linking, now let’s talk about backlinking. There is no doubt that backlinking is one great way to boost your blog’s ranking and engagements (you have read a lot about this).

But it is one thing to link back to other websites, and it is another to link back to quality websites that are doing well in ranking and engagements.

In boosting your site’s ranking, just linking any site won’t cut it for you, you need to link to trusted sources.

Why?

Because Google cares about the information on your page. If it’s from some spammy website, it won’t trust you and won’t rank you higher.

Therefore, before you decide to link back to websites, you need to conduct a search on complementary sites and choose the ones that would help your ranking and not ruin it.

What’s Next?

All you need to give your blog that boost is consistency and the effective tips that I have outlined above.
